Constipation: Fibre, Fluids and Daily Routine

Content updated: 1 September 2026

Constipation may involve hard stools, difficult bowel movements or going less often than is normal for you. Gradual food and routine changes can support regularity.

In this guide
  • Start with fibre
  • Add fluids
  • Build a routine
  • Notice warning signs

Start with fibre gradually

Adults often need about 22 to 34 grams of fibre daily, depending on age and sex. Useful sources include lentils, beans, vegetables, fruit, oats and whole grains. Increase fibre slowly so your digestive system has time to adjust.

Add enough fluids

Fibre works better when you also drink enough liquids. Water needs differ with weather, activity, pregnancy and medical conditions, so use thirst, urine colour and professional advice as practical guides.

Build a regular routine

  • Do not repeatedly ignore the urge to use the toilet.
  • Allow unhurried time after a meal when the bowel is naturally more active.
  • Regular walking and movement can support a healthy daily routine.
Increase fibre a little at a time. A sudden large increase can cause extra gas or bloating.

Notice warning signs

Seek medical care for blood in stool, severe or constant abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, unexplained weight loss, or constipation that is persistent or new for you.

Some medicines and health conditions can cause constipation. Do not stop prescribed medicine without professional advice.
