Heart-Friendly Daily Habits

Content updated: 1 September 2026

Heart health is supported by everyday choices: varied food, less salt and highly processed food, regular movement, no tobacco and proper management of blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol.

In this guide
  • Choose heart-friendly meals
  • Move each week
  • Avoid tobacco
  • Know your numbers

Choose heart-friendly meals

Build meals around vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grains and suitable protein foods. Reduce highly processed foods, excess salt, saturated fat and added sugars. Small repeated changes are easier to maintain than a complete overnight reset.

Move each week

Work towards at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week if it is safe for you. Brisk walking, cycling and active household work can contribute. Add strengthening activity when suitable.

Avoid tobacco

Smoking and other tobacco exposure increase cardiovascular risk. If you use tobacco, ask a qualified clinician about practical quitting support instead of relying on willpower alone.

Know your numbers

  • Check blood pressure at appropriate intervals.
  • Follow medical advice for diabetes and cholesterol.
  • Take prescribed medicines consistently and do not replace them with supplements.
Chest pressure or pain, sudden shortness of breath, fainting, or pain spreading to the arm, back or jaw needs urgent medical assessment.
People with diagnosed heart disease should agree exercise, food and supplement changes with their healthcare team.
