Sore Throat and Common Cold: Gentle Home Care

Content updated: 1 September 2026

Most mild colds improve with time. Rest, fluids, clean humidified air and sensible symptom monitoring can make recovery more comfortable.

In this guide
  • Rest and hydrate
  • Soothe the throat
  • Protect people around you
  • Know the warning signs

Rest and hydrate

Drink enough fluids and allow extra rest. A clean cool-mist humidifier, saline nasal spray or steam from a shower may ease dryness and congestion for some people.

Soothe the throat

Warm drinks and suitable throat lozenges can feel soothing. Do not give lozenges to children younger than four because of choking risk. Follow age instructions on every product.

Protect people around you

  • Cover coughs and sneezes and wash hands often.
  • Avoid sharing cups and utensils.
  • Stay away from people at higher risk while you are clearly unwell.
Antibiotics do not treat viral colds. Use antibiotics only when prescribed for a diagnosed bacterial infection.

Know the warning signs

Seek medical care for trouble breathing, chest pain, dehydration, fever lasting more than four days, symptoms lasting more than ten days without improvement, or symptoms that improve and then return or worsen.

Babies, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with chronic heart, lung or immune conditions may need earlier medical advice.
